Review:

From Norvelt to Nowhere, the sequel to Newberry Award-winner Dead End in Norvelt, kicks off in the small town of Norvelt, Pennsylvania during the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the fictional Jack Gantos lives with his mother. It's a solid representation of time and place, and it's outrageously funny.

The central relationship is between young Jack and his batty elderly neighbor, Miss Volker. Miss Volker is both educational mentor and unlikely best friend. Author and narrator, Jack Gantos, reads her as an hilarious grump. She's constantly irritable, impatient with fools and has all the great lines. Jack plays the perfect foil. Their dialogue, and Gantos' delivery of it, is consistently hysterical. Every kid should have a Miss Volker.

The meat of the story is a road trip. Jack and Miss Volker take off on a journey that rivals Jack Kerouac's. They're chasing Mr. Spizz, an "old lady" murderer or maybe romantic interest. Miss Volker flip-flops on the distinction. Every bit of the way is a treat.

An absolute must for a family road trip.
