Author John Boyne (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, 2006) delivers another moving story about war, this time World War I, told through the eyes of a young boy whose family is directly affected by it.

Alfie is five years old when England declares war on Germany and his father joins the British army. As he leaves for France, he promises Alfie it will all be over by Christmas. It's not, of course.

The story skips forward four years. Alfie's mother has taken on extra jobs and is increasingly withdrawn. Alfie has taken a shoeshine job to help out, and there's been no word from his father. Alfie, though, suspects his mother knows more than she's telling and a chance encounter provides a clue to where his father is. Alfie, brave and determined, sets out to bring him home.

At nine, Alfie has seen a lot. He befriends an old acquaintance of his father, a conscientious objector who's been ostracized. A neighborhood family is forcibly removed on suspicion of being German. Fear looms everywhere. It's a somber story, but Alfie is a strong narrator and Euan Morton's reading is engaging and alive.
