Review:

Alton Barnes was named, on the way to the hospital, after a city on a map. His naming was just the beginning of Alton's obsession with maps. A nerdy sixth-grader, he carefully observes and records data about his school, classmates and teachers, and converts it into maps. He maps everything. He has an impressive collection, which no one has ever seen, because some of them might be taken the wrong way. Like "Popularity Map of 6th Grade Lunch," and the map of Miss Wheeling's brain.

Panic ensues when his collection is stolen, and followed up with a threatening note. The blackmailer will go public with the maps if Alton doesn't follow his or her demands. One of which is telling the principal she says "Um" too much.

With the help of newfound friend Quint, Alton handles the stages of his dilemma -- fear, resignation, action, redemption -- with humor and grace. Reader Keith Nobbs has a youthful and bouncy voice which perfectly suits Alton's character. He pulls off the "dude"s and "totally"s of middle-school dialogue like a pro.
