The Extraordinaires™ Design Studio – INVENTIONS/BUILDINGS

Fall 2014 Toys
Ages: 8 & Up
Manufacturer: The Creativity Hub
Price: $19.99

The Extraordinaires Design Studio (Buildings or Inventions) is a must have creative toy that encourages children to use 21st Century critical play skills, such as observation, empathy, creativity/design, question creation, problem solving, storytelling, iteration of ideas and collaboration or sharing of ideas.

First, choose which Extraordinaire to design for and something to design (a building or invention) for that character. Read and review the Extraordinaire's card to learn something about him/her, the world he/she lives in, and some specific needs (or wants) he may have. Next, use the Think Cards for inspiration and design an extraordinary object, and finally present your creation to fellow players or upload it to a gallery. Each design studio features six characters and 36 Design Challenges.

Professional design thinking and processes are made accessible for children in this super fun and inspiring format - what child wouldn't want to solve housing challenges for a robot or mermaid? What makes The Extraordinaires Design Studio exceptional is its three-pronged approach, which is providing an intriguing set of characters (empathy and observation), a set of building or invention challenges (everything from a learning environment to a fort), and a set of "THINK" cards that suggest the framework to build ideas (Research, Design, Improve) that all designers in the real world use.
