Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood

Spring 2015 Television
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Rating: TV Y

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is a half-hour animated series airing on PBS and produced by The Fred Rogers Company. Little viewers' parents and grandparents likely grew up worshipping Fred Rogers and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and this delightful series spin-off won't disappoint them as they settle in front of the television now with their own children and grandchildren.

Daniel Tiger is the son of Daniel Striped Tiger from the original Mister Rogers' Neighborhood series, and many of the show elements echo those seen in the original program, for instance, Daniel talks directly to viewers, asking gentle questions and affirming a range of answers. Like Fred Rogers, Daniel also meets interesting people and makes new friends in the Land of Make-Believe. For all the similarities, this program still feels completely fresh and inventive, relying more heavily on narrative storylines and musical strategies to reinforce its themes, serving as an homage to its predecessor rather than an imitation of it.

Each program includes two short episodes. In the first few episodes of the series' second-season, "The Tiger Family Grows," "The Baby is Here," and "There's Time for Daniel Too," Daniel basks in pride as he takes on new responsibilities as he gets older - but he has conflicting feelings about his "big boy" status when he finds out he'll soon become a "big brother." Through imagination, play, and gentle explanations from his parents, Daniel comes to realize big brothers can also be big helpers, and that there's room for everyone in a loving family.

According to its website, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood focuses on pre-school skill-building for children ages 2 - 5, providing a "social-emotional curriculum" that engages and educates "through imagination, creativity, and music." The website also says storylines are developed with the input of early learning specialists and research-based curriculum. Parents who hope to make the most of this program as an educational tool can visit its website for spectacular resources and educational strategies about the themes spotlighted in each episode.

Expect Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood become a household favorite, providing beautiful days in the neighborhood for a whole new generation of viewers.
