Review:

Helping and Leading Others will earn you a HALO-and not just the heavenly kind. This year, five extraordinary kids from around the country were honored for their volunteerism and innovative programs designed to help their communities. The ceremony show features the usual pomp and circumstance afforded an awards fete, but the real stars are the young, socially minded kids who make the world a better place. Created, produced and hosted by Nick Cannon, this year's special featured performances by Nick Jonas, Echosmith, The Vamps and Fifth as well as appearances by Nickelodeon stars and Hollywood celebrities. The 2014 HALO Awards honored Lulu Cerone, 15, who raised $58,000 through her "PhilanthroParties," for water projects in Africa, and $33,000 for local organizations. Yash Gupta, 18, who started Sight Learning, an organization that collects and donates used eyeglasses, sets up eye exams, and gives the gift of sight to students around the world. Cassandra Lin, 16, who found a way to take waste cooking oil from local restaurants and turn it into biodiesel fuel with her Turn Grease into Fuel (TGIF) programs. She's collected more than 170,000 gallons of waste cooking oil and in turn, heated the homes of more than 290 families. Nicholas Lowinger, 16, who provides new footwear to kids all around the country and has helped 21,500 kids in 35 states. And Alanna Wall, 14, who started Polished Girlz, a now 25-chapter group that visits special needs kids and hospitalized patients, and gives them a bright new manicure.

While each honoree receives grants for their organizations and scholarships for education, their work and the gratification that comes with giving back is the ultimate inspiration.
