Peter Rabbit

Spring 2015 Television
Ages: 2 - 5 yrs.
Producer: Nickelodeon
Rating: TV Y
Review:

Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. channel offers a modern twist on author Beatrix Potter's childhood classic. Each half-hour Peter Rabbit program includes two episodes, rendered with impressive CGI animation to re-imagine the woods where title bunny Peter plays with pals Benjamin Bunny, Flopsy and Mopsy, and Squirrel Nutkins.

Peter loves adventure but he often forgets to look before he (literally) leaps, landing him in some sort of moral dilemma. According to the program's webpage on the Nick Jr. site, storylines are intended to encourage young viewers to "pursue challenges and persevere despite set-backs," and sometimes that means owning up to your mistakes and making the tough choices that will help set everything right again-a good message for this program's intended pre-school audience.

In "The Tale of the Rabbit and Squirrel Great Adventure," Peter recounts how he and Squirrel Nutkins became friends, a story that reveals how a casual nighttime adventure escalated into something with serious consequences. In "The Tale of the Squeaky Toy," Peter borrows a beloved toy from a friend but then he loses it-and must follow a dangerous path to get it back. And in "The Tale of Two Friends," Peter grapples with hurt feelings when his best friend looks up to a new pal, but he ultimately discovers that true friends have room in their lives for many happy and healthy relationships.

Despite the important and weighty themes in each story, this program still feels fresh, friendly and fun. Nick Jr.'s Peter Rabbit is wonderfully reimagined for a whole new generation of children.
