Doozers
Spring 2015 TelevisionDoozers is a half-hour CGI-animated series developed for pre-schoolers by The Jim Henson Company and available on Hulu and Hulu Plus.
The series follows Pod Squad members Molly Bolt, Spike, Flex and Daisy Wheel as they work together in the town of Doozer Creek, brainstorming and building new products. According to the Doozer website, the Pod Squad "loves to design, create and innovate" eco-friendly inventions, and program content is meant to engage young children in STEAM education. (STEAM is the educational term referring to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.)
Spike is the big thinker. Daisy Wheel's the spunky one. Flex loves to tinker. And Molly Bolt is the level head who knows how to motivate the team to turn their innovative ideas into action. The show embodies the much needed skills 21st century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity skills.
In one episode, the gang evaluates so-called "failed" inventions and considers ways to redesign them for better results. ("What was this - is now that.") In another, they work together to create a derby cart that achieves speed without a motor, a challenge that has them considering a range of physics concepts (in age-appropriate language, of course) as they explore their community for inspiration.
The storylines, bright 3D animation, the music and the pacing work in combination. Doozers reflects the natural curiosity of pre-schoolers and with the avuncular professor's help, encourages their tendencies to explore though hands-on play, using logic, creativity and problem-solving skills.
