Review:

Well-designed and lively, Cricket's print and digital content from near and far (folktales, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, memoirs, recipes, graphic novel excerpts, comics and artwork) is soulful, funny and thought-provoking. And, judging from responses to the magazine's many opportunities for participation, fans feel closely connected to what they read, submitting their artwork, poetry, writing, and book recommendations and taking part in creative contests. (New in the 2014 July/August issue,"Crowd-Sorcery" welcomed readers to contribute ideas for a fantasy to be written by "The Star Shard" author Frederic S. Durbin and illustrated by Emily Fiegenschuh. With reader input, the first installment of the fantasy, "The Girl Who Writes the Future," ran in the November/December magazine.) "Letterbox" pages and online "Chatterbox" posts invite lively sharing from fans-emails and letters are closely monitored; no trolling or questionable material permitted. In existence since the early 1970s, this superlative magazine now counts among its fans the children of its original readers.
