Review:

National Geographic Kids magazine brings the world to life through striking photos, weird-but-true-facts, and fascinating stories from around the globe. There is a definite emphasis on animals and the natural world; recent issues have spotlighted wild cougar families in the Teton Mountains, the giant Brazilian wandering spider, and the "extreme parenting" style of emperor penguins. Tech gets its due as well, through features on Virgin Galactic space travel, and the hottest gadgets debuted at toy fairs (think robots controlled by a free smartphone app, or motorized stuffed animals that use infrared light and special sensors). The magazine also contains a number of recurring features that kids look forward to, such as collectible animal fact cards and "What in the World?" brain teasers that focus on photos in extreme close-ups. An abundance of short articles and nonfiction text features makes this magazine work well for classroom use as well as home reading.
