Words Are Here, There, and Everywhere

Spring 2015 Website

This vocabulary building toolkit from Sesame Street provides useful activities for caregivers and educators looking for ways to build children's vocabulary, in both oral and written forms. Like other Sesame Street toolkits, this one includes a family guide with parent tips and a collection of short Muppet videos for use with children. By far the most useful part of this toolkit is the collection of activities for adults and children to do together. These range from a video game that helps children categorize words to a series of printables that allow children to develop their own interest-based collections of words. The starter kits for word books and word trees will give adults a few good ideas and materials to begin these activities with children, and the activities can easily become self-perpetuating when the pre-printed pages of the word book are complete. If adults are looking for strategies to build specific vocabulary areas, beyond simply reading books or talking with children, this toolkit will offer helpful ideas.
