Review:

"According to Aggie" is a regular American Girl feature presented in comic strip format. It's also an example of how this light and lively magazine offers its readers--particularly its youngest target audience--entertainment, empowerment and safe haven.

In the September/October issue, pre-teen Aggie, the star of the strip, worries that her choice of t-shirt for the first day of school is "dumb." A friend offers reassurance and when Aggie gets on the school bus, thought balloons reveal that the other students are either glad to see her or far too wrapped up in their own concerns to think about her shirt. The strip ends with Aggie paying forward her friend's reassurance. That perspective and care runs throughout: recipes, crafts, fashion tips, quizzes and polls, reader-generated art and creative writing, fashion and guides to healthy living. Articles spotlight young people who are making a difference in the real world, and take on such deeper concerns as cheating in school, bullying and toxic friendships.
