Review:

Sesame Workshop bats it out of the park with Elmo's Super Numbers.

The mission is math and the setting is Sesame Street - but this time, the famous street is also the site of Numeric Con, a play on fan conventions like Comic Con. Number buffs show up in force and, like their real-life fan convention counterparts, they take great care to choose costumes that reflect their fan-dom. Elmo sports a glittery purple cape and headdress as The Dark Nine (referencing The Dark Knight) and pal Leela pulls out all the stops with her Princess Three-ah costume (a clever play on Star Wars' Princess Leah). And, like true fan convention buffs, they also show up with a plan to meet their favorite number heroes, among them Doctor Two and In-Three-Ana Jones (plays on Doctor Who and Indiana Jones, respectively). But the convention itself suffers from troubles rooted in numeric problems and it's up to Elmo to use math to save the day, providing preschool readiness skills such as number recognition, counting, and basic arithmetic skills, in the process.

The whole family will enjoy more than two hours total of witty educational skits, catchy musical numbers, and brilliantly subtle details that pay good-natured homage to Comic Con culture. Bonus DVD features also include a full-length video titled Elmo's Shape Adventure; scenes from upcoming titles The Furry Four and Elmo The Musical: President; a printable comic book; and a guest appearance by Henry Cavill, star of Zach Snyder's Superman blockbuster Man of Steel.

Lots of children's educational videos can present effective pre-school readiness lessons but very few indeed will manage to do it with such originality, humor, and keen attention to detail. Elmo's Super Numbers is a super program, and if you're keeping count, expect young children to want to watch this DVD over and over and over again. That's at least a gazillion times.
