Review:

Foggy's Big Fright is part of the Windy and Friends series of interactive storybooks. Each story, which the creators have termed "appisodes," comes with the interactive book, two games, and links to a variety of crafts, recipes, and activities. In this Halloween-themed appisode, Foggy, Jean Cloud's lovable dog, is frightened by all the scary costumes and activities of Halloween. His friends show him understanding and help him to feel better.

The app includes a Word Game in which children are shown Halloween-themed objects and need to drag the appropriate letters into place to spell the respective words and an interactive World Map where children can click on places and characters to learn their names. The use of stop-motion photography and handcrafted dolls is a charming change of pace from computer graphics. The "look" sets the tone and underscores the intent; this series of apps go beyond teaching language arts by focusing on social and emotional skills such as cooperation and empathy.

Parents can manipulate a variety of settings in order to best fit the needs of their child; for example, children can read the book alone or use the auto play feature, turn hints on or off, and chose whether or not to show the text. Readers can quickly and easily toggle between English and French versions of the app, which was a great feature for our family, because our children are learning French. There are links to Frequently Asked Questions and a Tutorial, which is currently under construction. And, parents can visit the creators' blog for additional "off screen" activities.
