Review:

Cookie Monster Challenge is a PBS Kids app for children aged three through five years. While most educational apps focus on early reading, writing, and mathematical skills, this app was designed to teach children executive functioning skills including self-control, attention, memory, following of directions, problem-solving, and observation.

The app features ten mini-games, which become progressively more difficult in order to keep children engaged and challenged. Through completing these mini-games, children earn cookies for Cookie Monster. After earning the first three cookies, children are asked to press a button to give Cookie Monster the cookies they have earned. However, this is part of a larger game that requires children to earn machine parts to get the cookies to Cookie Monster. After having worked hard for the cookies, our testers at the lower end of the recommended age range became frustrated watching the cookies fall to the floor. They would have been happier with knowing what to expect. That said, Cookie Monster Challenge is still a fun and solid way to teach and hone important skills of self-control, attention, memory, following of directions, problem-solving, and observation. Mastering these skills will help children be prepared before, during, and after the school day. Thanks, Cookie Monster.
