Review:

Valerie Leonhart Smalkin is ventriloquist, musician, composer, and writer, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. She was part of the Val & Pam Kindersingers, as well as a co-writer, performer, and co-producer of the Emmy award-winning children's television program It's Kindertime. Smalkin produced her first children's music CD Springtime Dance in 2014, which spotlighted her puppet work with the characer of Silly Goose. Her follow up recording, A Gentle Halloween, celebrates the season with 10 songs that are spooky but never scary. Tunes such as "One Little Skeleton," "Jac O'Lantern," "Haunted House", and "The Ghost Who's Afraid" all explore the surface elements of the celebration day, in simple and non-threatening ways. At the same time, any deeper insights about the origins, history or true meaning of Halloween are never explored, and it is treated as just another "Hallmark" holiday. Lack of lyrics or liner notes makes this simply a supplementary fun product to be sold at her live shows.
