Troy Andrews grew up in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, surrounded constantly by music and its many makers. Their favorite greeting was, "Where y' at? Where y' at?" Troy's big brother James played the trumpet, had his own band, and urged Troy and his playmates to, "Follow me." That they did, making their own instruments until the red-letter day when Troy found a real instrument, a discarded, broken trombone -- which he taught himself to play.

The next time James paraded down the street, Troy played his trombone and joined the parade. His brother noticed and called out, "Trombone Shorty (because the trombone was twice his size), where y' at?" And that's how he got his name.

This delightful autobiography chronicles the rise of a famous trombone player who loves and acknowledges his roots. Andrews started the "Trombone Shorty Foundation" to help preserve the musical heritage of his beloved New Orleans and to help children who are growing up in difficult circumstances learn to play music. The full color, watercolor and collage illustrations are large, gorgeous, dramatic double-page spreads that evoke the essence of both the music and its many players big and small.
