Review:

Ben, Cass, Jemmie and Justin have been best friends, and sometime crushes, since grade school. Now it's the summer before high school, their last time carefree and together and they want it to be memorable.

The story unfolds in the week leading up to Ben's brother Cody's 7th birthday at the start of what looks to be a boring and hum-drum summer. But then Cody discovers a "magic" hat and the group stumbles across an abandoned house in the woods. Enter mystery, adventure and a secret history.

The author uses alternating points-of-view to let each of the main characters tell the story in his or her way and by the end the reader knows them all intimately. The male voice in the book - from young Cody, to teenaged Ben and Justin, and Ben's father - is particularly strong. It captures that thing youthful summers are supposed to be about - unfettered time, discovery and best friends.
