Gracie & Friends Park Play

Gracie & Friends Park Play

Fall 2015 Mobile Apps
Ages: 3 - 6 yrs.
Platform: iPad
Review:

It's time for a day at the park with Gracie and Friends. Complete three park-themed activities: cut and feed pie to birds, give hula hoops to your friends, and pick apples. But, be sure to make sure everything is fair! There are eight levels of bird-feeding, sixteen levels of hula hooping and twenty-one levels of apple-shaking.

Gracie and Friends Park Play is part of a four-app series that is designed to teach equipartitioning, the division of a collection of objects into equal groups or a continuous whole into equal parts. This skill is an important foundation to understanding fractions, ratios, division, multiplication, number sense, and number composition. Using the app helps children understand that creating equal groups means placing the same number of objects into each group. Additionally, it helps children learn comparative vocabulary such as more, less, fewer, equal, etc.

Unfortunately, although we greatly appreciate the app's focus on such a key skill, this benefit is soon outweighed by the activities' repetitive nature. Our young testers were immediately drawn to the app but quickly became disenchanted with having to complete the same challenges multiple times.
