The celebration of creativity-rooted in respect for children and an awareness of their cares and concerns-is a frequent theme for prolific author/illustrator and children's recording artist Barney Saltzberg ("Beautiful Oops," "Arlo Needs Glasses," "Andrew Drew and Drew"). Here, Saltzberg sparks imagination with a cleverly constructed book that is just what its title suggests. From the outside, it's a conventional, hardcover picture book. Open it, and readers see a smaller book, ostensibly consisting of observations and stories created by a boy named Seymour. That small book is followed by a smaller book, filled with drawings and poems by word-loving Fiona, Seymour's younger sister. The last book, smaller still, is by little brother Wilbur who "can't write yet, so he drew pictures," and told Seymour "what to write." Together, these gentle, "handmade" little books are likely to encourage young readers to do some creative storytelling of their own.
