Review:

This gorgeous book-a collaboration between the Hong Kong-based Design and Cultural Studies Workshop and the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation, working with the China Institute in America-is part of a "We All Live in the Forbidden City" book series that celebrates Chinese imperial history, culture and architecture through the lenses of past and present. Adults and children alike can spend hours poring over each panoramic page of fine-lined illustrations; older children and adults will find layer upon layer of information in the text, written as paragraphs, captions and timelines that reflect and interpret the astonishing detail captured in the artists' renderings of the Forbidden City and its palaces, courtyards and gardens. Here, too, are the people, from the dynastic royals who ruled there for hundreds of years to the modern day tourists who flock there today. Younger children will enjoy seeking out the book's charming guide: a tiny cat who wanders through the pages. A magnifier is included with the book, by the way, to fully appreciate the wealth of detail here.
