Evil Spy School is really about just that: a school is recruiting promising young individuals and training them to work as counteragents for SPYDER. In Stuart Gibbs' new spy novel, the CIA runs a similar program (The Academy of Espionage), and protagonist Ben Ripley is part of it. The action opens during Ben's "Survival and Combat Skills Assessment Exam," wherein students are given paintball guns and turned loose in the Academy's firing range for a battle simulation. Ben doesn't quite have the same skills or pedigree as classmates such as Erica Hale (her ancestors being Revolutionary War heroes and superspies, and his being grocers), or the bravery of another peer who's described in battle as looking "like a heavily armed elf." Ben's biggest fear is letting down his teachers, and through an unfortunate turn of events he does just that. But he's determined to get back in their good graces, and bringing down SPYDER'S evil spy school is just the ticket. Readers will happily rejoin the world Gibbs first created in the novels Spy School and Spy Camp, and will root for Ben as he tries to make things right. Gibson Frazier returns to narrate this audio version, and his enthusiasm brings the suspense and action to life for his listeners. This is another fast-paced, funny story from Gibbs, and a great addition to the spy genre.
