Derek Jeter has carved out a nice second career co-authoring (along with writer Paul Mantell) a series of books that meld his love for baseball with a passion to inspire children to read and to follow their dreams. Hit & Miss, like his previous The Contract, is heavily autobiographical. This time, Derek is on a new Little League team and has high hopes that this will be a championship group. The contract that young Derek signs in that earlier book figures prominently in this new installment, as his commitment to rules such as "Do your schoolwork and maintain good grades" and "Be a role model to [sister] Sharlee" is tested, with consequences. Jeter's books come with a message, such as remembering to think before you act, but his sincerity and his love for family and baseball help keep the story from becoming too preachy. Actor Jesse Williams (Grey's Anatomy, among other projects), returns to read the audio version; his voice is steady and engaging, with an age-appropriate sense of wonder as well. This is a strong choice to pique the reading interests of young sports fans.
