Review:

With a gift for re-creating time and place with humor and subtle truths of love and loss, storyteller Adam Booth spins tales drawn from his childhood in West Virginia. (The CD title represents Booth's old street address.) There are the trials of a non-athletic, baseball-loving kid and the pay-off: Booth's later-in-life, unexpected triumph on the baseball field told with a sly and witty twist in tribute to the grandpa who had always encouraged him. Defeat turns to victory on the local Roll-a-Rama skating rink when 11-year-old Booth loses a competition, but gains the biggest prize: shared fun with a new friend. Booth's ability to combine entertainment with well-observed life lessons shines especially bright in "Old Folks' Home." Here, Booth recalls how, as a 5th grader, "suddenly school felt like prison," and to let off steam, he and a friend would engage in a Friday afternoon ritual down by a creek near a senior citizens home, racing sticks and pieces of trash in the current. In the process, the boys and their new elderly friends connect through mutual empathy and celebratory common ground.
