Deep Woods Revival
Fall 2015 MusicRed Yarn Productions is a folk music and puppetry company based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2011 by performer and teaching artist Andy Ferguson, Red Yarn creates musical puppet shows, educational programs and accessible media for kids and families. Deep Woods Revival is Red Yarn's second album for kids, and unlike many puppet-based productions, you do not necessarily have to have seen their show to enjoy the music. The majority of songs are culled from the American old-time tradition, with tunes such as "Skip To My Lou," "Mole In the Ground," "Ain't Gonna Rain," and "Sourwood Mountain" all given playful, acoustic folk-rock and bluegrass arrangements. The few original tunes include the story/song title track, and the lovely country blues "Crosseyed Gopher," plus a fine take on Woody Guthrie's "Jig Along Home."
Ferguson's tuneful folk-style voice suits the music well; the very fine Deep Wood Revival Band, skillfully supports him. When Ferguson is joined by the lovely vocals of Portland folk singer Laura Veirs, the result is the standout "Crosseyed Gopher." The CD comes in an eco-friendly cardboard sleeve, with complete lyrics, photos from the shows, and gorgeous illustrations by Ryan Bruce.
