Review:

The Pointed Man Band (multi-instrumentalist Dan Elliott) takes listeners on quite a journey in this one-of-a-kind album rendered with a near-stream-of-consciousness approach. A sampling of the offbeat elements here: a time-keeping fox and his taupier (water vole) ally, a mole invasion ("Moles on Parade"), pirates-turned-farmers, sirens of the sea, and a "Baleen Curse" in need of lifting. The album launches with a terrific, image-rich track about the time-obsessed "Red Fox" ("It's the little hands that keep the big hands running …/won't you put your hand in mine as the days unwind") and ends with "Drifting," accompanied by percussive bass notes and the re-creation of a haunting whale song. And, in the culmination of this musical odyssey progressing through each song, a whale does indeed take to the air, "swimming 'round without a care for gravity." If it's hard to keep up with the story's ins and outs, the narrative can be found in the CD booklet.
