Chibi Lights LED Circuit StickersFall 2015 Toys
The Chibi Lights kit includes everything kids 12+ need to set up simple LEDs, switches, and sensors: twelve individual LED light stickers (six white, two yellow, two blue, and two red), a five meter roll of copper tape to run conductive lines, two small binder clips, two batteries, a black conductive plastic sheet, and an extra double-sided adhesive sheet.
The manual instructs key concepts such as simple circuits, parallel circuits, current, and switches as they create increasingly complex light designs. It begins with an introduction to the components themselves (e.g., batteries, LEDs, copper, etc.). Then, users can begin working with simple circuits; this is great, because children can get started and see results fairly quickly. They can then build on this success as they add LEDs and additional copper to their creation- creating parallel circuits. At this point, children are able to see that although multiple lights can be powered in such a way, each addition diminishes their brightness. This visually demonstrates how the power is shared among the lights.
The manual also includes templates, drawing activities, pages for unique creations/experiments, additional ideas for exploration, and a "debugging" section to help children trouble-shoot when their circuitry fails to perform as expected. Additional assistance and information is available on the Chibitronics website. Across the board, the manual is interesting and fairly easy-to-follow.
The kit has excellent long-term play value. There are many activities in the manual, but there are also suggestions for additional activities. And, children can experiment with their own creations. The stickers are reusable (i.e., the kit contains double-sided adhesive to apply once stickers have been used). All in all, this is an entertaining and engaging way to introduce children to the basic Physics concepts of electricity.
