Review:

How can a little bear climb up to sit on a big chair? What will happen to a big owl sitting on a little branch? And where did a little turtle find such a tiny book to read? Each page of Lizi Boyd's Big Bear Little Chair offers readers a window into a different story-some funny, some warm, and some simply intriguing. The art is beautifully rendered in grayscale, with a spot of red in each picture. The animals are illustrated with distinct personalities and subtly humorous facial expressions. The repeated rhythm of "big x, little y" on each page makes the book a lovely read-aloud, one that beginning readers can easily help their grown-ups to read. Although the book is marketed for children aged three to five, many older children (including grown children) will also enjoy these tiny pictorial stories; my own son, who is six and who now prefers chapter books, asked for it repeatedly, and I was happy to oblige. This picture book is well worth adding to any library, classroom, or personal bookshelf, and is likely to become battered and well-loved in short order.
