Review:

Beatrix Potter was born into a wealthy family in London in 1866. Never sent to school but raised in an upstairs nursery by nannies and tutors, Beatrix was given her mother's paint box when she was a little girl. Painting with these watercolors became the central focus of her life, painting pictures of her pets, and giving her lonely life comfort and meaning - especially when her beloved little brother was sent off to school.

David McPhail captures and pays homage to the beloved author and illustrator in lovely paintings of his own. With a soft brown palette and brown ink, he outlines boxes within which he depicts Beatrix's life in gentle scenes in brown ink sketches painted in glowing watercolors. While recommended for all children, this fine picture book should especially appeal to budding artists.
