Old WolfFall 2015 Fiction
At the age of eight, Nashoba, the leader of the wolf pack, is old and being challenged by Garby, a younger, stronger male. It's The Starving Time - the end of winter before spring fully develops - and the eight wolves and the two cubs of Nashoba's pack are literally starving. Desperate to find food, Nashoba follows the call of a raven, Merla, who both harasses Nashoba and leads him to a small herd of elk and far too close to the dwelling of humans - including thirteen-year-old Casey Seton.
Casey loves to play video games, especially Bow Hunter where he "hunts and kills" animals. Given an archery set for his birthday, Casey cannot and does not wait to try out his ability, ignoring his parents' instructions.
With Casey coming off as a willful brat, the tension of the plot builds toward an inevitable denouement. Casey and readers learn important differences between video games and reality. An excellent book with wonderful fine-line black ink illustrations by Brian Floca, who makes Nashoba look both soft and old.
