Twelve year old Binny's first day at her new school was not as she had hoped. Transfixed by an unusual butterfly, Binny collides with a not as yet met classmate as she chases the butterfly to the church wall. Come to find out, Binny squashed the birthday gifts classmate Clare was taking to her mother. Needless to say, young Clare wasn't very happy. No number of apologies could dismantle her devious revenge.

Desperate to escape her classmates' bullying, Binny is delighted when a storm rips the roof off her house and sends the family to a rental house in the country. But a change in residence didn't mean a change in schools.

McKay deftly introduces a new century and new characters as she weaves time periods, secrets and love of nature with acute and humorous observations of the bully and the bullied. The plot twists and flat out fun make for a terrific, and at times truthfully painful, middle-school read.
