Review:

As a very young man, Langston Hughes set sail for Africa as a working seaman. Ever after, he had a love of all kinds of water, rain, rivers, and oceans, which he expressed in numerous poems.

The artist, Ashley Bryan, who also loved the sea, collected some of Hughes's poems into a beautifully illustrated anthology for children. Bryan used his mother's sewing scissors to make colorful double-page collages to depict these poems with stylized and exquisite interpretations. "Sea Calm" flows in muted greens and blues; "Long Trip" is lively with tossing boats and waves. A lovely melding of paper and words.
