Review:

Cooking Class is a colorful, eye-catching cookbook packed with fun and tasty recipes that, with some supervision, even young children can prepare. Author Deanna F. Cook does a great job mixing basic flavors and techniques with those suited to more adventurous palates and ambition. Pancakes and trail mix share space with roasted root veggies, California rolls, and homemade balsamic vinaigrette, and the whole book is packed with helpful tips, such as how to zest citrus or separate eggs. The "Home on the Ranch" dressing is creamy (albeit on the garlicky side) and free of the additives many bottled dressings have, while the sweet and delicious "Easy-Peasy Applesauce" was just that: easy enough for a class of elementary school students to help with. Abundant photographs not only look appealing, they provide helpful visual aids for novice cooks. The book features fun extras, too, such as recipe cards, food-related stickers, and conversation cards for dinner table games. This is a wonderful kitchen addition for the whole family as well as for classrooms with access to a kitchen.
