Review:

I Am Yoga is a gentle story about feeling small in a big world, and a simple introduction to yoga. Author Susan Verde, a certified yoga instructor, helps children learn to quiet their minds and still their wiggling bodies through basic poses such as Tree Pose, Airplane, and Warrior. Verde champions the mind-body connection, and in an Author's Note at the end of the book she explains that yoga practice begins naturally in infancy (e.g., "tummy time" is actually Cobra pose). Stress from school, bad dreams, and overscheduling can all be alleviated through practicing yoga. Peter H. Reynolds's buoyant ink and watercolor illustrations give life to the story, and there are more detailed notes at the end of the text, which describe the poses themselves. This is a nice book to share with young children as a stepping stone into mindfulness.
