Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin
Spring 2016 TelevisionOcean Mysteries, is sponsored by the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Its enthusiastic emcee, Jeff Corwin, takes viewers on conservation and educational missions to underwater wonderlands. Exploring the ocean's deepest secrets from the coral reefs of Thailand, viewers are swept along with Jeff, a certified diver and avid fisherman. Like all programming, some episodes are more evocative and alluring than others; when the series goes deep into uncharted waters, like the canals of Bangkok to find the world's largest freshwater stingray, or the beaches of Costa Rica to release endangered leatherback turtle hatchlings, it scores high points. Visually exciting and providing a sense of mission to one's travel, these exotic episodes provide sufficient fodder to inspire viewers to seek out similar adventures. Less successful are episodes shot solely within the aquarium or the more scientific fish hunts that seem to lack a "hook," so to speak. Tracking tiger sharks, for instance, left this reviewer scratching her head as the rationale was not fully explained. As the show as entering its sixth season, some mysteries are now land-based, like the rainforest sloths in Central America. Loyal viewers will not be disappointed.
