Review:

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, an animated half-hour series produced by The Fred Rogers Company, continues to present the social and emotional educational programming pioneered by Fred Rogers in his iconic PBS children's program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood

.

Deft art direction, gentle musical numbers, and well-crafted storylines help young viewers notice and appreciate the world around them, starting with the people and features of Daniel's own neighborhood. And as Daniel encounters new situations, the audience is given an opportunity to learn about feelings and kindhearted behavior.

In Nighttime in the Neighborhood, Daniel and his friends attend a nighttime story session at the local library. And thanks to Daniel's winsome personality, even a simple walk through the neighborhood at night becomes a celebration of small details not evident during the daytime. In a two-part episode titled A Storm in the Neighborhood and After the Neighborhood Storm, Daniel and his friends are fearful of an approaching storm but their parents show them how planning ahead can help keep them safe, and even how to pass the time when the lights go out; and later, they learn how to deal with the emotions, as well as the physical aftereffects, of the damaging weather event.

Stories include many elements to hone preschool readiness skills such as counting, color and shape recognition, and observation and logic . . . and, of course, there's always time to engage in some "make-believe" inspired by what they see around them. Episodes also include well-produced live-action video segments to further explore the themes presented and observe real children engaged in the situations and activities as depicted in the animated episodes.

While Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood has only a couple of seasons under its belt, it's driven by the decades of research and production experience at the heart of its (grand)parent program, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. For top-notch entertainment and educational elements, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is an excellent destination.
