Peg + Cat

Peg + Cat

Spring 2016 Television
Ages: 5 - 8 yrs.
Rating: TV Y
Review:

Math makes the world go round, a fact that's gleefully celebrated in Peg + Cat. Little Peg is self-assured, clever, and filled with boundless energy. She's a self-proclaimed superhero and she and her cat tackle problems using logic, reason, geometry, algebra, and basic arithmetic. She also plays a heck of a ukulele.

According to the PBS website, Peg + Cat is designed to "inspire preschoolers' natural curiosity about math and help them develop new skills and strategies for solving problems creatively in their daily lives." Peg + Cat succeeds with room to spare. Each episode offers two distinct stories as the heroine uncovers a Big Problem for which math is the key to making the world make sense again.

In "The Allergy Problem", Peg may have developed an allergy to her beloved Cat. When distraught Cat leaves home, the search for her pal teaches Peg valuable lessons about counting, organizing information, and learning from mistakes. In "The Lemonade Problem" Peg assesses data and uses bar graphs to build business at her lemonade stand. Other episodes focus on everything from reading maps to making predictions and using simple shapes to construct more complex forms.

Little viewers are likely to hang on Peg's every adventure, thanks to inventive art direction, thoroughly delightful music, and the program's knack for weaving clear educational content into skillfully written scripts. You can count on your little ones to fall under Peg and Cat's spell but parents be warned, you'll be sticking around for the end of the episode right along with them. It's current, it's creative, it's effective, it's engaging.
