Ranger Rick MagazineSpring 2016 Magazines
Ranger Rick offers excellent reading material for children who are interested in wildlife and who enjoy nature writing. Each issue offers a variety of articles, including nonfiction features on particular animals, brief news blurbs about conservation issues and initiatives, and a running cartoon strip about the fictionalized adventures of Rick and his animal friends. Nature-related puzzles and word games offer some less reading-intensive activities, and each issue also highlights the contributions of young readers, through artwork and student-written riddles and jokes.
The images and photos in Ranger Rick are as beautiful and fascinating as one might wish for a nature magazine; just as importantly, the layout is easy to follow and uncluttered. The articles are well written for the target age range, and the range of features offers enough variety for children to find something of interest in each issue. The comic strip about Rick and his animal friends is sometimes written in a serialized format, so that readers have the chance to follow a longer story arc than such magazines generally offer. The editors also do a nice job of inviting youth participation; in addition to soliciting student contributions, the "Buzz" nature news feature sometimes highlights youth contributions to conservation efforts. Especially given the low price of subscription, Ranger Rick is an excellent choice for children interested in wildlife.
