Review:

ChickaDEE is a variety magazine for beginning readers. Each issue offers a reliable series of features surrounding a seasonally appropriate theme-back to school in September, and monsters in October, for example. A running comic strip about Chick and Dee opens each issue, followed by a feature about random fun trivia (my personal favorite was the introduction of the word "borborygmus," or tummy rumbles-who says big words aren't fun?). Nonfiction short feature stories highlight an animal of the month, and explore a science topic, such as why curly hair curls or how different features of caves are formed. One short fiction piece is always included, and each issue also contains a craft activity, a special snack or food to make, and a variety of word puzzles, visual puzzles, and jokes.

Given the variety of activities in each issue, ChickaDEE offers something to appeal to nearly every reader. The features are well designed and appealing. The nonfiction pieces, for example, are informative, yet brief and clear for beginning readers; the craft activities are fun and doable for kids and parents; and the jokes are well aimed at the funny bones of elementary school children. The short fiction does vary in quality, and is sometimes less compelling than the other sections of the magazine. Given how much else ChickaDEE has to offer, this is a minor complaint. These magazines get read, and reread, and reread; activities that I might otherwise have to twist my son's arm to do (helping me to make snack, for example, or trying a word search) suddenly become attractive when he sees them in ChickaDEEThis periodical is well worth a subscription.
