The conventional wisdom that readership of print books among adults is dwindling away is proving wrong, according to recent surveys that shows it to be on the upswing. Judging by Cricket's fiercely loyal and engaged readers-as reflected on the magazine's letters pages-children and teens haven't succumbed entirely to the lures of electronic media, either, enjoying this superlative print magazine. And no wonder. Cricket, a literary publication for ages 9 to 14, began in the early 1970s (and has launched numerous top-notch specialized magazines for different age ranges), but it is ever fresh. Its exceptional, wide-ranging content, inspired by the past and present, and by life experiences large and small, encompasses well-written works of fiction and nonfiction, first-person narratives, poetry, and suspenseful serialized tales, all visualized by notable illustrators. Readers' involvement doesn't stop with the letters pages: they can try recipes, write book recommendations, submit their own work to the magazine's regular poetry, writing and art contests; and they can contribute characters and other content to professionally written "Crowd-Sorcery" stories. A cast of comical cartoon insects, led by mischievous Cricket, appear throughout the magazine's margins, offering an additional layer of enjoyment.
