Review:

Singer, composer, and ventriloquist Valerie Leonhart Smalkin is a Baltimore native whose third album finds Smalkin and her puppet creation Goose, presenting twelve original songs designed to engage children, and encourage singing and dancing. Beginning with the merengue rhythms of "Sing! Sing! Sing!" Smallkin name checks communities from all over the world. "Shake With Me" uses Caribbean rhythms to get little ones moving, while the jazzy "Springtime Dance," and the 50's rock influenced "The Slip" all are lovely invitations to shake your bones. The somewhat Lambchop-sounding puppet Goose sings "Share With Me" and "Polliwog,"(ventriloquism is always a difficult thing to translate to and appreciate on a recording), while songs like "Recycle! Reuse! Rebuild!," "Welcome!," and "Goodbye My Friends," employ Smalkin's own melodic voice and keen sense of rhythm to encourage children to be both active and aware. She uses electric piano, as well as occasional sound effects and well-programmed drum tracks to good effect. The CD comes in low plastic packaging, while lyrics and related activities are available on her well-designed website.
