Review:

Cory Hills combines two favorite forms of performance for kids: storytelling and banging on things. He essentially invented an art he dubbed "percussive storytelling," creating and reinterpreting songs and stories with a percussion self-accompaniment. Hills' renditions of familiar tales and songs take on a new life through his nimble and creative use of drums, cymbals, bells, shakers, and other percussion instruments. This CD, the artist's second, includes known tracks like "I'm My Own Grandpa" and "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" as well as original compositions that range from silliness to quite subtle effects with voice and instruments.

However, it is an unfortunate reality that listening to a recording of percussive storytelling doesn't generate the same fascination as actually watching the artist at work. With these complex vocal and rhythmic performances, this is a unique and valuable addition to a classroom or family room's library of recorded entertainment for younger kids. Here's hoping this very clever and inventive musician performs in a town near you.
