Review:

In Molly Idle's Caldecott Award-winning picture book, Flora and the Flamingo, a little girl and a pink flamingo dance together, with a few temperamental hitches, in a balletic pas de deux; in Idle's book that followed, Flora partnered with a penguin. As in previous "Flora" books, Idle tells the story not in words, but in a vivid design palette, the characters' body language and facial expressions, and in a creative use of lift-up flaps to further the story. Here, when Flora tries to dance with a pair of proud peacocks, the birds squabble and in the process, they tear in two the pretty fan that Flora is using to mimic the dramatic spread of their tail feathers. Seeing her distress, the peacocks make peace and come up with a use for the fan that saves the day, revealed to readers in a dramatic, double-page foldout.
