Review:

Prolific children's author/illustrator Melanie Walsh explains her inspiration for this story about a little boy with Asperger syndrome: "This is the book my son didn't have when he was young," she writes on the dust jacket. Illustrated in bold colors and an eye-pleasing design style that pops, the book begins as Isaac introduces himself and then takes readers through his day, telling in his own distinctive voice how he functions in the world. Sometimes he forgets to respond to people who say hello. Loud noises can be overwhelming, and sometimes "I tend to say whatever comes into my head," Isaac explains. He loves his pets, holds a special toy during reading time to help with his "fidgets," and, because looking into someone's eyes is "scary," he looks instead at foreheads, as his dad taught him. Isaac's brain, he explains, "just works a little differently." As a means for promoting understanding and validation, too, this book is informative and notably child-friendly.
