Review:

Peep has exciting plans for himself and Egg after Egg hatches. Egg, however, isn't planning to hatch. He doesn't want to watch the sunrise from the top of the henhouse. "It's too high. I'm not hatching." Despite all the glorious adventures Peep promises, Egg adamantly refuses to hatch. Finally, in the denouement, Peep gives up and leaves Egg. Being left behind is not pleasing to our favorite egg who hatches and runs after Peep.

This is a fine book, both for children who are lap-sitters and for preschoolers in small groups. The repetitive double-page spreads are easily understood and invite participation. Utilizing large white backgrounds, the artist depicts Peep with a minimum of smooth, broad brown lines (only a few lines change to alter Peep's expression.) Egg is just one smooth brown ellipse. With the mildest of humor, this book is sure to be a favorite with children just beginning to understand the format of books.
