Review:

Peter is moving with his father and Harold, a good dog, to a new house on the other side of some dark, unfriendly woods where only a wooden bridge separates their house from this ominous forest. Neither Peter nor Harold can sleep the first night for fear of the terrible things the woods may hold. The next day, Peter constructs a large, dressed character stuffed with pillows whom he places on the bridge to protect him and Harold. Peter dubs him "Lenny, Guardian of the Bridge." But he and Harold cannot sleep for worrying that Lenny is lonesome. So Peter makes Lucy, a companion for Lenny. Together, the four compatriots decide that the new home isn't as bad as first feared.

With a soft gray palette and usually a distant perspective, the complex, fine-line characters, are depicted with splashes of muted watercolors. Harold is an orange-ish shaggy dog as large as Peter. When a neighbor, the child Millie, appears on the scene, she wears red mittens, a red tartan skirt and a red polka-dot tie. The text is wonderfully expanded into a gentle fantasy by the stellar illustrations. An original touch carries the text onto the back cover. If the cover is lost, the story is still satisfyingly complete.
