Review:

In every good story, the hero has obstacles. Twelve -year-old Sophie Quire -- bookmender, bookworm and daughter of the town bookseller -- knows this better than most. In her fantastical adventure, the obstacles come in fistfuls.

Sophie's late mother's life was a mystery; one her father won't talk about. And it would have remained so if Professor Cake hadn't sent swashbuckling Peter Nimble and his sidekick Sir Tode (a knight turned into a cat-horse by a terrible hex) to find her and deliver a magical book. Sophie, it turns out, is a storyguard like her mother was. One of an exceptional and endangered few.

The adventure revolves around four special books with magic powers that could be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands, specifically those of the evil Inquisitor Prigg. Prigg has decided that stories are the "scourge of nonsense" and is determined to eliminate every last one of them. But he needs all four magic books to accomplish it.

Along her treacherous journey to find and recover the books, Sophie encounters secret library passages, creepy things that slither in the dark, and no end of menacing spells. The threads of the story spread out like the roots of a banyan tree, and somehow all connect in the end to make this a wonderfully elaborate tale of fantasy and adventure.
