Review:

At twelve, Sol finds herself living in Louisiana with a cruel stepmother and her six-year-old sister, Ming. When their beloved mother and other younger sister died in the Philippines, Tita Vea managed to marry their father and move with them to the United States. After settling his family in a grungy, furnished apartment in Magnolia Tower (which was not a tower and had no magnolias), he deserted them and returned to the Philippines.

Sol is a wonderful, believable heroine whose feisty nature and vivid imagination are her best defenses to protect herself and Ming from Vea's verbal abuse. While the author definitely does not rescue the sisters or give them a happy ending, she gives them a surprising friend and a story that concludes with realistic hope.
