Review:

Widely considered one of the most highly respected storytellers in the world, Heather Forest is one of the "greats." In her newest collection Ancient & Epic Tales from Around the World, Forest describes these stories as containing "Powerful human emotions and recurring themes of death, love, natural disaster, supernatural forces, and parallel worlds [that] flow through the heart of these ancient narratives."

The stories in this multicultural anthology are brief, thought provoking tales from around the world; Greece, England, Ireland, Japan, Australia, Africa and India to cite a few, and their messages are universal. All are superbly composed to further understand and appreciate the principles and virtues that inform our lives.

Some stories expertly deal with death and how different approaches to this inevitable event can greatly influence daily decisions. In the first story, Gilgamesh Seeks Eternal Life, readers learn the importance of enjoying life's simple pleasures (as opposed to expending all one's energy avoiding death). Some plots are familiar (such as well-known fables like "The Wolf and the Goat" or "The Ox and the Frog", or time-honored legends and epic characters such as Beowulf, Sir Gawain, Finn MacCoul, or the Hunchback), while others will be new to many readers. Each one of these folktales, myths, and fables was carefully crafted in easily understood and modern narratives.
