Review:
Robert Sabuda's book The White House: A Pop-Up of Our Nation's Home celebrates one of the most recognizable symbols of American democracy. Inspired by Sabuda's own visits to the White House as a child, six intricate 3D scenes introduce readers ages 6+ to this famous landmark.

The visual tour opens with construction of the White House. Reflecting its nickname of "the people's house," the narrative refers to both the presidential families who lived there and to the workers who made it possible. In the opening scene, a diverse group of laborers use ropes and pulleys to lift heavy sandstones in preparation for the house's first resident, President John Adams in 1800.

Pop-up fans expect impressive and playful paper engineering from Sabuda. He doesn't disappoint. The second scene takes us to the elegant East Room of the White House. In this ceremonial space, a giant chandelier hangs from an implied ceiling. Next we enter Abraham Lincoln's study which cleverly flips open to reveal the Lincoln bedroom where special White House visitors stay. Throughout the book, the words of Richard Watson Gilder's 19th century poem Inauguration Day

remind us of the great power and responsibility that comes with the office of President of the United States, all the more meaningful in a presidential election year.

After a stroll through the Rose Garden, we continue to the President's Oval Office in the West Wing where a Secret Service agent stands watch. Our final stop is the South Lawn, whose spacious expanse of green grass hosts the traditional Easter Egg Roll. As a special treat, visitors to RobertSabuda.com can download a 3-piece template of the White House and try their skill at creating their own patriotic pop-up.
